Update on Ministries in The Democratic Republic of Congo

Leadership Development in Africa

October 2008

In October 2007, my wife, Jill, and I led a one week, Pastors Leadership Conference for 30 Christian leaders in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo. The material combined spiritual leadership principles and practices from my book, The Spirit-Led Leader, and coaching techniques from my spiritual life coaching practice.

Jill led the group in prayer as they walked and meditated on a labyrinth, which she built for them. As a result of the week-long experience, pastors reported being greatly encouraged in their relationship with God and in their ministries, getting clarity about their vision for ministry, experiencing healing, and learning a great deal about leadership.

This year, we returned to Goma to offer in-depth coaching for pastors/leaders one on one. I spent 6-8 hours each with three different leaders, and will continue meeting with them for the next six months via internet. We got off to an excellent start, though, of course, the real test is what they do with the coaching over time. I was especially excited when two of them almost immediately started using the coaching principles and practices with some of the people they are working with. In the future, we will be exploring creating a replication/multiplication model that would train coached pastors to coach others in their churches and organizations.

While we were in Africa, more doors opened for us to continue to expand our leadership development and spiritual renewal ministries. Opportunities include:

• Teaching pastors through a continuing education program at the Christian University in Goma (Feb 2010)

• Teaching advanced level students at the Christian University in Goma, who will go on to teaching positions in the seminary (Feb 2010)

• Leading a Pastors Leadership Training Conference in western Rwanda for 75-100 pastors (Nov 2009)

• Ongoing coaching of pastors (Oct 2008-Mar 2009)

• Creation of coaching training for future African coaches (TBD)
